Recently, Chem. Soc. Rev. published a summary of "Photothermal therapy and photoacoustic imaging via nanotheranostics in fighting cancer" online by Professor Dai Zhifei of Peking University and Professor Chen Xiaoyuan of the National Institutes of Health. In this paper, the development of inorganic and organic nano-photothermal converters (PTAs) and the strategies to improve the effect of PTT are summarized firstly, including the application of appropriate laser dosage, imaging technology to guide the treatment, the development and absorption of PTAs in NIR-II region, the enhancement of photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) and the accumulation of PTAs in tumor. Secondly, the advantages of PTT combined with other therapies in cancer treatment are introduced. Third, give an example of the new application of PAI in cancer related research. Finally, we discussed the challenges and challenges of PTT and PAI against cancer, especially their clinical transformation. It is believed that PTT and PAI with noteworthy characteristics will become the next generation of non-invasive cancer treatment technologies and improve the effectiveness of cancer treatment.
